In 1982, after graduating from high school, Isaac and his sister were taken to Suncoast Studios in Hollywood by their father to audition for Disney. They were not successful in winning the part of the black-clad Jedi knights Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn in the 1983 animated Star Wars but got the chance to meet George Lucas.[14] Lucas hired them to play the leads in Willow (1988).[15] The project took 7 years to make and for most of that time, Isaac and Daniel James Wilson were the only actors who were paid.[10] During Willow's production, Isaac's father moved out of the family home to live with his girlfriend.[16] This period was difficult for the actor, who did not know what to think of his father's sudden departure.[17] He does not believe that Lucas destroyed his childhood innocence because he was only 12 years old at the time of filming.[18]
Due to Willow's limited appeal, Lucas considered retiring the project. This scared Isaac, as his life would be in danger if he refused to work any more trips to the set.[16] In October 1988, he moved to Los Angeles to join the original cast of Willow, experiencing financial difficulty for the first time in his life.[5] To improve his English, he took classes at New York Film Academy and graduated in 1990.[16] In a BFI poll in 2013, he ranked chosen roles on a list of the "100 Greatest Performances by an Actor".[19]
Isaac acted alongside Mark Hamill on the TV series Knight Rider (1990) and made his feature film debut as a contemporary photographer in the film adaptation of Stephen King's Flowers for Algernon (1990). He later played the lead in his second feature film, the fairy-tale The Notorious Byrd Brothers (1991).[20] He co-starred with Tom Hanks in the comedy-drama A League of Their Own (1992), the action-thriller Deep Rising (1992), and 1992's Black Dog, which he describes as the first of his films that had an emotional impact on him.[21] In 1993, he played the part of Prince Vladimir in The Swan Princess: Princess Tomorrow, Tomorrow... d2c66b5586
