Let me repeat then: Finale 2010a, a free maintenance release for all Finale 2010 owners, is now available for download at /Finale/Update.aspx. Like most updates, this addresses recent changes in computer operating systems and hardware, and fine-tunes existing issues (fixes bugs) found in the software since release. Here are a few examples of these types of improvements found in 2010a:
As I see it, a much better facility for teaching is Finale Reader 2010, a free download from www.finalemusic.com/reader which allows you to view, play back and print Finale 2010 documents. This means that you can email students their assignments, or host them on a college intranet, and they can work on them at home (or anywhere else) if they wish. Orchestra and band parts could also be usefully distributed to all and sundry in this way (assuming no copyright restrictions), banishing in perpetuity that tired 'I lost the music' excuse!
Now, I'm aware that my personal preferences as regards software interface design may not be yours, and there's no doubt that Finale's large user base will find the new 2010 features tempting. Certainly, existing users are unlikely to find any reason to jump ship, given the continued high quality of Finale's audible and printed results. However, if you're about to invest this quantity of cash in notation software for the first time, I think you'd be foolish to make a decision between Finale and Sibelius on the basis of their price differential alone, without giving the demo version of each a serious trial run. Although they can both achieve excellent results, they present very different user experiences, and you can only properly evaluate the advantage of Finale's lower UK price once you have practical experience of how its way of working fits in with yours.
Another font designed for the automatic Rehearsal Mark feature in Finale 2010. This is a special version of the JW Rehearsal Shadow 1 Bold font, that is specially designed to have vertically centered upper case letters and digits. This font will NOT work well with lower-case letter rehearsal marks! Please refer to the JW Rehearsal Serifs Bold font for general instructions on how to use the font.
Another font designed for the automatic Rehearsal Mark feature in Finale 2010. A clean sans serif font with thin border and a subtle drop border shadow. 4 different brackets supported. This version of the font is suitable for marks that use lower case letters; for only upper case or digits try the JW Rehearsal SCAPS 1 Bold version. Please refer to the JW Rehearsal Serifs Bold font for general instructions on how to use the font.
A free rehearsal mark font with serifs (created by Jari Williamsson), specially designed for the new Rehearsal Mark expression style that was introduced in Finale 2010. In the Expression Designer, put the rehearsal mark style between any of the [], {}, (), {} brackets to get automatic enclosures. Like this:

eMusic Readers for Score Libraries. There are commercial websites that provide extensive libraries of scores, music published in electronic form and available for downloading for a fee. Musicnotes, for most any computer as well as the iPad, and Muzibooks (iPad and iPhone), are two apps that provide access to published scores but with different packaging. Muzibooks creates a unique app for each score each for a fee; Musicnotes is a free app that gives you access to any score you purchase from their online library. Most of the scores are from the common classical and entertainment genre, with Musicnotes having the more extensive repertoire. The third app in this category is eScore; eScore maintains an expanding set of links to public domain, free scores on the Web. The apps in this category may be useful for score study in music activities that only require standard repertoire. 153554b96e
